About malleable iron pipe fittings

What a fire sprinkler spec actually requires from a malleable iron fitting, and how ours are made.

What is malleable iron?

Malleable iron starts as a brittle casting and is then annealed at high temperature so the internal structure turns into a tough, ductile form. The result is a fitting that takes torque during assembly without cracking, and holds pressure over a long service life. Our data sheet lists a working pressure range of 1.6 to 2.5 MPa and a working temperature range of -20 to 200 degrees C, with tensile strength above 330 MPa.

Sizes: DN15 to DN100

The standard range runs from DN15 (1/2 inch) up to DN100 (4 inch), which covers the full diameter run of a typical fire sprinkler branch line down to the sprinkler outlet. Every size is available in the figure styles shown above, so a branch, tee, coupling or elbow all come from one casting standard.

Black vs galvanized finish

Black finish is the traditional look of a fire system and pairs with black-painted fire pipe. Galvanized adds a zinc layer for extra corrosion resistance where the line sits in a damp or exposed location. Specify the finish per line in your bill of materials and we will match it fitting for fitting.

Thread standards: BS EN 10242 / BSPT and NPT

These malleable iron fittings are produced to BS EN 10242 (BSPT) and DIN, with the US-range equivalents built to ASTM A197 (NPT) per our technical documentation. Which thread standard should I specify?

Match the thread standard to your pipe and the rest of the system. Ours cover BS EN 10242 (BSPT) and DIN, plus the US-range NPT equivalents. Cross-mating BSPT and NPT does not seal.

What sizes are available?

DN15 (1/2 inch) to DN100 (4 inch) across the full figure range, in black or galvanized finish.
