Seamless steel pipe is made by heating solid steel billets and perforating them into hollow tubes, then processed by rolling or stretching. With no welds, it is particularly strong and withstands high pressure and temperature. Available per ASTM/ASME or EN standards.

What changes when you move from ERW to seamless on a fire line.

How seamless pipe is made

Seamless pipe starts as a solid steel billet that is heated and perforated into a hollow tube, then rolled or drawn to size. Because there is no weld seam, the wall is uniform all the way around, which is what gives it the higher pressure and temperature capability.

When to choose seamless over ERW

ERW is the default for most sprinkler mains and branch lines. Seamless is specified where the design calls for higher working pressure, higher temperature, or a service that simply will not accept a welded seam. For many fire water systems the two are interchangeable within the rated range; for the rest, seamless is the safer call.

Standards and finishes

Produced to ASTM A106 / A53 / A795 and EN 10216-1, with the same end and surface options as our ERW range: plain, beveled, grooved or threaded ends, in original, black, red or galvanized finish.

FAQ

Is seamless pipe required for all fire systems?

No. NFPA 13 allows both welded and seamless steel pipe within the rated range. Seamless is chosen for higher pressure, temperature or where a weld-free seam is specified.
